Oscar Dresses

MY FAVORITE

Never in a million years did I think I would be typing that Annette Bening is the best dressed of the night. But that is what's going on right now.

The dress is structured perfectly, the sequins and pearls are great, and I think all dresses should have sleeves like that.

The other best-dressed is Mark Wahlberg's wife, which is weird because she's not even relevant to this awards show in any way.

BEST

The rule of the night was...if you were wearing a shade of purple you looked good. Unless you were Marisa Tomei.

I like this dress because it is awesome and also because it reminds me of those sugar eggs with icing, which are so good. And in stores now because it's Easter.

I have the biggest crush on Scarlett. I can't handle it. This dress is great because it's not boring and the back is perfect. Perfect.

This dress fits Mila Kunis so well. I can't take it.

Natalie Portman has been dressing herself so poorly during awards season and this is just a HUGE improvement.

PURPLE GONE WRONG

I've seen Marisa Tomei in person. She is extremely tiny. In this dress she looks the exact opposite. The diagonal cut across the hips paired with the waist cinch is the worst.

Sadly, this dress would have been really awesome without the tulle.

OTHER GREAT DRESSES THAT I LOVED

Michelle Williams has this clothes thing on lockdown. She never makes a mistake. Plus, this dress has the sleeves that all dresses should have.

Outer Space dress. Can't go wrong with that.

I like how you don't know where this dress starts.

Jennifer Lawrence is the new ScarJo. I have a lady crush on her.

One of the best dresses wasn't at the actual Oscars, but at the Oscar viewing party.

There weren't that many bad dresses this year, which is good for the eyes but boring for this blog post. It's hard to be funny when talking about good dresses.

Either Hugh Jackman's wife was showing her support for Black Swan or she knew she was going to get tired and need a pillow.

I know this dress is Dior but it looks like ugly wedding napkins. Not in a good way.

It's hard to write funny commentary about people who know how to dress themselves. So, if you want snarky insults, scroll immediately to the section labeled WORST.

I've never been to outer space. But I've seen this dress and that's a pretty close second. She is the best dressed tonight. She wins. And her prize is an extremely good looking husband.

A lot of people probably won't like this. Those people are wrong. This dress is like a sculpture. It's unique and the saturated color is what I dream about. Good job.

These two dresses are perfect in every way. I'm probably saying that because I am having a love affair with sequins this summer.

You may think looking like an Egyptian warrior is a bad thing. You are wrong. It is awesome. I am addicted to the wide shoulder. You think I'd like football more than I do. Just FYI, I don't like football. At all. What are sports? Also, R.I.P. Alexander McQueen. This dress is awesome.

This is probably a controversial choice. Or, it would be, if people actually looked at this blog and cared enough to debate my comments. I love this dress though. It has big shoulders and it's flowy. I'd wear it a hundred times. In 12 days. Yeah. Do THAT math.

DESERVES A SHOUT OUT

There is something off about this dress. I think it has to do with that single strap horribleness. STILL the color is awesome and it's HARD to wear a layered, ruffled (quasi-ruffled?) dress without looking rather large.

Pretty. Boring. But pretty.

Minus points for only one cap sleeve. This would be in the BEST category if it had two cap sleeves. There's a lesson in there somewhere. That lesson? The more cap sleeves the better. Also, I'm absolutely in love with the v-neck and the chest draping. Chest draping sounds a little too much like chest raping. Too far?

WORST *Shakes head in Disapproval*

It's a shame that crop circles barfed all over Tina Fey's dress, because it fits her so well and it has cap sleeves. And we all know how I feel about cap sleeves. But, let me break it down for you mathematically: Crop circles being ugly > Cap sleeves being awesome.

From what I know about Mindy Kaling, this may or may not have been a dare. I hope it was a dare. Prom 2010!

Some people debone a fish and throw away the skeleton. This woman decided to debone a fish and wear it as a dress. She should have just seen Piranha 3D like a normal person.

I'm sure a lot of people like this. It looks like she's trying way too hard. You see how she's standing? That's the way people stand when they desperately want to look skinny in photos. Also, the dress is boring. ALSO, butt ruffle.

It looks like someone covered her in bandages and then decided it wasn't beige enough so they had to dump oatmeal on her. I keep thinking of the word barf. Because that's what this looks like.

I kind of respect her for going with the thigh ruffles. I mean, she clearly doesn't care.

Oh man this dress is so ugly. I can't stop looking at it. Why is there a seam running down the center? Like...really. Why. She probably wanted to look like a gothic mermaid. She looks like a Sea World shamu novelty balloon.

I learned two things from this horrible dress: that you can dye toilet paper gray and that you can turn gray toilet paper into a dress.

First we had a bandage dress, then we had a toilet paper dress. It only makes sense that we have a garbage bag dress, too. Ugh this is puckering all over the place. I can't look at it. Why does it have a bubble thing going on at the bottom? That rainbow seam across her stomach has got to be one of the most unflattering things ever. Although, ok, maybe not as unflattering as thigh ruffles.

Oh sweet jesus.

The main reason I dislike Avatar is because I find the blue cat people unbearably ugly. Like, it pains my eyeballs to look at them. This dress is the dress equivalent of blue cat people. MEOW. Related tangent: why didn't the Avatar cat people meow or purr? I mean, they were cats.

This is ugly to the point of being commendable.

I respect that she took a risk. I do not respect that that risk involved a ridiculous slit and an airbag.

TOM HANKS CONTROL YOUR WIFE. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

Mesh Lace Shoulder Warmer? Yeah because, when I want to be warm, non-delicate super insulating materials like mesh and lace are the first things I turn to. Also, Shoulder warmer? I think it's called a jacket. And it's not supposed to be cut in half.

I know people are super into recycling these days but they should really draw the line at neck braces and road kill.

Distracting Movie Costumes

So there were these new pics of Hilary Duff shooting a movie for ABC or some nonsense and all I could think about is how her outfits are going to be so distracting on the big (or I guess small) screen. I had the same feelings when I saw the nasty Sex and the City 2 picture that came out a few weeks ago.

The main problem in all the following pictures is that they take the concept of TOO MUCH to new extremes. If they would have just toned it down a little (For example, changing the color of Hilary Duff's shirt) there wouldn't have been a problem.

Distracting costumes are serious. They took me completely out of Bright Star.

I like Bona Drag. I've purchased shoes from them. They are based in Encinitas. They have really unique clothes. They even got their name from a Morrissey song. But sometimes things go very wrong...
Actually this is a weird case where even though the clothes kind of fail, that failure is commendable because it is a byproduct of originality. Respectable failure.

This is actually Betsey Johnson. It's like goth and victorian and western and tea party and I don't know what to do with it.

The spandex and color makes this look like a Power Ranger that never was. Fuschia Ranger. The solid panels on the side make the model look wide. The top part fits really well but I mean...this just isn't my favorite.

Things that drive me nuts, clotheswise

People always ask me to dress them or to give them tips. I basically tell them not to wear any of this and they'll be fine. click pictures for big. Although you don't really want to see any of these clothes bigger than you have to. trust.

1. WHATEVER THIS IS CALLED.
I don't know where this trend came from but it came in quiet and deadly like wave of Anthrax. Only more deadly.

2. Square necks.
This cut just makes me uncomfortable. to wear AND to look at. Sesame Street your shirts. If the neck isn't brought to you by the letter V or the letter U then don't even try.

3. Empire Cut
I am totally baffled by the popularity of this. I mean, it's SO unflattering, It makes everyone look top-heavy and, in turn, much bigger overall than they are. MAYBE I'm biased because I like girls to look like 12 year old boys. I don't know. Whatever. I don't think anyone should want to rock a look that is like shoulder pads for your chest.

4. Unnecessary Smocking
This is my biggest pet peeve. The smocking always bunches UP and moves UP, which means people who wear it constantly are pulling it DOWN. Plus, usually clothing manufacturers include smocking at the worst places. Also, smocking is ugly as sin.

*NOTE, whenever a shirt I like has this crap, I sit with scissors and cut the elastic out. It takes forever.

5. Random Waist Cinching.
If you absolutely NEED a cinch (hint: YOU DON'T), use a belt. This just makes it look like your shirt is tucked into your underwear.

6. Black Lace
This is admittedly less aesthetically horrid than the other trends. But it makes me think of really really tan girls with extensions and a lot of makeup. Which, if that's your thing, COOL, but I'm not a fan.

7. Ugly scarves with ugly fringe
I don't like the whole "bunch it in a triangle around the neck" look. It makes people look like they are suffocating. Then I feel like I'm suffocating. Either way there's just a lack of oxygen all around.

8. This horrid blue color
I just hate this color. I don't even know what this color is called. But, like, even the Smurfs are a better shade of blue. The only thing that makes this color worse is when it's combined with jersey fabric.

8. Kimono cut
I know a lot of people like this, I just don't know why. It basically eliminates the torso. It's also basically a combo of the empire triangle fiasco (#3) and the unnecessary cinching (#5)

9. Weird boob wrinkles
If you don't know why this is horrible, then there's really no help for you.

This years Emmys had some pretty dresses. Some unfortunate dresses. And one truly heinous dress. My opinions follow. Click pics for big.

I know a lot of people won't like this but I love it. It's way different than the usual GOWN and it's not stuffy. Also...maybe I'm a little biased because I want to be Mary Louise Parker. Maybe I'm even more biased because purple is my favorite color.

The swirl lines on this dress move perfectly along her body. It's crazy how well this garment fits. Super art deco. Super awesome. Plus, now I get to post a picture of my PFG (personal favorite ginge), Michael C. Hall.

I love the sleeves. Honestly I just want to marry the sleeves. I also love the shimmer and color. They are simple yet strangely flashy. I am as crazy about this dress as I am about Anna Torv's show Fringe. Which is a lot. LOVE Fringe.

This is one of the best dresses I've ever seen period. It's sculpted so well that it looks like art. January Jones is working it so hard. LOVE. IT.

I have no idea who this woman is but her dress is brilliant. Seriously that cap sleeve thing is one of my top favorite things in fashion ever.

Rose Byrne has yet to demonstrate to me that she can act but this dress is so pretty.

All I could think when I saw Heidi Klum was Yzma from the highly underrated Disney gem of wonder The Emporer's New Groove. Still, she looks awesome.

I CAN'T DECIDE
Although Olivia Wilde's dress is a little too figure-skater-has-a-wedding, it still fits her crazy awesomely and I'm all about fit. Plus, the detail is outstanding and everything is very soft and pretty.

THE HANDSDOWN WORST DRESS EVER

Congrats, Nancy 'O Dell. You earned this title with flying colors. That necklace really just is icing on the cake. The cake of heinous. MY EYES! THE BEES! MY EYES!

I love your show, Elizabeth Moss, but this is wrinkly and the shape it's creating is bizarre.

You're cool on The Office but... PROM '09. I hate the color. I hate the asymmetrical witch cut at the bottom. Plus Drew Barrymore's Alexander McQueen already did it and did it way better.

TOO MUCH IS GOING ON HERE, Christina Applegate. Too high. The bow. The lace. The visible seams down the left and right sides. The mermaid tail at the bottom. One sleeve. Sweet Jesus this is a train wreck.

A documentary about Karl Lagerfeld aired on IFC. I enjoyed it a lot. Everything out of his mouth is totally fascinating.

At first I was frustrated because the director didn't really focus on the clothes or Lagerfeld's impact on the fashion world. But then I realized...this isn't a movie for people who want to learn about the designer or his work. It's for people who already are fascinated by him and want to hear him speak.

I totally love Patricia Arquette's wardrobe in True Romance, my favorite movie of all time. Oh man, it's sooo wrong (holy dressed-in-the-dark alert!) but it's sooo right. And it's full of great fashion tips.

1. Neon blue can and should be used as an accent for anything. Who knew?

2. You can pretty much pull off any ouf, you just have to make sure it fits you.*

*There's a fine line between having unique attire and wearing a costume. The best way to stay out of costume territory is CUTS AND SHAPE! What really makes these clothes work, despite their ostensible lack of cohesion, is the way they fit Patricia Arquette perfectly.

Free People used to be awesome. I would buy from them constantly. Now, I turn to them for comedy and not much else.

This is maybe the worst ouf my eyes have ever seen. We have penis shorts!!

The cut of the yellow thing is atrocious, which is sad because the pattern and color are delicious. I would consider buying it on sale and cutting it into a bolero type vest.
